Where X comments go and how fast they arrive

They go under one post. You paste that post's link, set an amount, and the replies appear in its thread. Your profile, your other posts and your follower count are not touched, so the conversation lands exactly where you pointed it.

The pace is slow on purpose. Replies are the one number on X that people read line by line rather than glance at, and forty of them stamped with the same minute look exactly like what they are. At 20 to 100 a day, a batch of 30 lands over a day or so, which is how a post that people keep finding actually collects its replies.

Twelve hours is the longest start time of any X service we run. Likes begin within 6 hours and views within 1, so if you want the numbers under a post to climb together, start the comments first.

What the replies say, and what they can't do

Each reply is a short, positive line in English, the kind of general response that fits under almost any post. You don't pick the lines, you can't send your own list, and two replies under the same post can land close together in tone. That is the honest shape of the service.

Random wording has limits worth knowing before you spend an allowance on it. A reply won't answer a question you asked, won't mention a detail from your post, and won't carry a link or a name. If the post says "which cover should we use, A or B?", none of the replies will pick one, and a thread full of general praise under a direct question reads oddly.

• Good fits. A launch, a finished project, a milestone, a photo, a clip: posts where general approval is the natural response.
• Poor fits. Questions, polls, arguments, anything in another language, and posts where your followers usually reply with specifics.
• Your own replies still matter. Answering the replies you get, including these, is what keeps a thread looking lived in.
• Nothing about you changes. The replies sit under the post like anyone else's; we don't post, like or follow anything as you.

English only is the other limit. If your audience writes in Spanish or Japanese, a thread of English replies under your post will look out of place to exactly the people you want to impress.

When to start comments on an X post

Start them when you publish. With a start of up to 12 hours, replies started in the morning may not begin until the evening, and then keep arriving through the next day, while the post is still being shown to people deciding whether to join in.

A thread with nobody in it is hard to be the first to reply to. A handful of replies already there makes the next person more likely to add one, which is why a few comments early on a post usually does more than many comments late.

Starting takes a few seconds. Copy the post link from the share menu, open the X account in your dashboard, press Create instance, pick Replies (the dashboard uses X's own word), paste the link, set the amount and press Start instance. Delivery carries on after you close the tab.

How many comments a post should have

Look at the numbers X prints under every post: replies, reposts, likes and views, side by side. Replies are normally the smallest of the four by a wide margin. A post with 2,000 likes and 300 replies looks like an argument broke out; the same post with 30 replies looks like a post people liked.

• An everyday post. Five to fifteen replies is plenty. More than your last ten posts ever got stands out.
• A post with bought likes. Keep replies at a few for every hundred likes, never the other way round.
• A launch or pinned post. This is where 30 to 50 replies earns its place, because every profile visitor reads it for weeks.

That shape is why the plan amounts are small. Starter weekly's 10 replies covers one post a week properly. Pro weekly's 30 covers a launch or a few everyday posts, and Elite weekly's 100 suits an account posting daily or an agency spreading replies across several accounts.

Why X comments have no top-up

There is no top-up on replies. If X removes one, or the account that posted it is suspended, the count under your post goes down and stays down. We don't send a replacement, and we would rather print that here than bury it.

X also ranks the replies under every post and can tuck some behind a "Show more replies" link, so not every reply you receive sits at the top of the thread. The count includes them either way.

For comparison, X followers carry a 14-day top-up, likes and retweets 30 days, and views 60. Replies are the one post service in the X plans with no top-up, which is another reason to keep the amounts small.

Deleting the post ends it, as with every service: the replies go with the post, and a repost of the same thing starts from zero.
